Deanna Dent (Traveling Virgin)

Deanna Dent graduated from Arizona State University in 2009 with a degree in Journalism and Fine Arts. She has worked in various media but her first passion will always be the still image. Over the years she has interned with The Arizona Republic, The Bend Bulletin and worked as a freelancer for Readers Digest, The Associated Press and various local Arizona publications. None of these has compared to the opportunities afforded her while working for News21 this summer. The Virgin of Guadalupe is a subject that has interested her for the past year and throughout several trips to Mexico. She hopes to continue working as a multimedia journalist.

Chrystall Kanyuck (Fighting Battles)

Chrystall is passionate about telling great stories in new ways, so as a master’s student at the Cronkite School at ASU, she focuses on reporting and online media. She also helps young journalists as a graduate assistant. Before entering the Cronkite School, she worked in the San Diego area as a community journalist and occasional culture blogger. Her undergraduate communication degree from Cal State San Marcos focused on social justice. She also loves to talk about In-N-Out Burger, where she would probably still work if she hadn’t landed that first reporting job.

David Kempa (Crossing Lines)

Dave Kempa is a writer, though he’s found in the past year that storytelling can take many forms — often at once. He has lived in Italy and Argentina and is now finding excitement in his own country.

He likes steak and public libraries. He is from Wisconsin.

Jeremy Pennycook (Building Success)

Jeremy thinks he is incredible lucky to be able to do what he does. He loves to tell stories, regardless of medium, and enjoys utilizing different platforms to do so. Growing up in Tennessee under the guidance of British parents instilled in Jeremy a strong sense of plurality. He hopes to use his versatile skill set to help different cultures and people understand each other and communicate more effectively.

Jeremy is an avid musician, cinemaphile and amateur athlete. He believes in filling life with a well-rounded, diverse set of experiences.

Christine Rogel (Changing Policy)

Christine Rogel graduated in 2006 with a degree in English from the University of Colorado at Boulder. As an undergraduate, her interests were in the arts — particularly writing fiction. Upon earning her Master’s degree, Rogel plans to enjoy the transient life of a journalist. Her interests include investigative reporting and telling stories in multiple formats. She also is interested in innovative journalism and has worked for the Gannett New Media Innovation Lab and the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship at the Cronkite School. In her spare time, she is most likely lost in a bookstore or painting. She plans to keep bees one day and write for the rest of her life.

Elizabeth Shell (Building Success)

Elizabeth Shell is a master’s student at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. Originally from Michigan, she received a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics in 2005.

She has immensely enjoyed her time as fellow for the Carnegie-Knight News21 Initiative, spending 10 weeks intensively investigating an issue that is both evergreen and important. Creating a compelling and innovative look at Hispanic students in the U.S. public education system has been incredibly rewarding. After graduation she hopes to continue creating documentary-style journalistic pieces that integrate various multimedia.

Evan Wyloge (Analyzing Amnesty)

After high school, Evan Wyloge packed up and left for the ski bum-lifestyle of Flagstaff, Arizona. Between days spent snowboarding and mountain biking, he attended Northern Arizona University, where he studied political science and French. He also developed a love of journalism while there, working for the school paper and some of the local publications. He has since worked for a national mens magazine, Arizona’s largest newspaper and a variety of other media outlets. He returned to school, this time to earn his Master’s degree in journalism from the Cronkite School. He loves the challenge of the program and the impressive faculty, but hates sleep. He hopes to go on to help guide innovations in journalism.
